Shadow Environment Secretary delivers keynote speech to Labour Party Conference

Kerry McCarthy MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, delivered her keynote speech at the Labour Party Conference today.

Lisa set out the importance of the UK’s membership of the European Union, particularly the impact any changes would have on environmental protection issues, air pollution, the circular economy, food and farming. She then went on to criticise the appointment of Owen Paterson MP as Environment Secretary, as well as the Conservative Party’s position on energy and the environment. She said that the Government had “broken their promise not to allow fracking in water protection zones and sites of special scientific interest.”  She added: “They’ll be trying to get this through Parliament soon – and we will do all we can to stop it.” She then confirmed that she will be working closely with the Energy Secretary Lisa Nandy ahead of the climate change talks which are scheduled to take place in Paris in December.
